The Recording lndustry Association of Vietnam (RIAV) established in November 2003, mainly aimed to protect the legal rights and duties of its members - compact disk and tape producers. For the main duty of protecting rights and legitimate benefits of its members, RIAV issued the tariff for using production in October 2007, signed contracts with several music business entities on using products of its member in March and April, 2008, and warned companies that were currently using products illegally by official dispatches, but at the same time encouraged them to negotiate with RIAV to get the license. These are the achievements resulted from RIAV’s efforts in protecting its legal rights.

Within the last three quarters of 2007, the Copyright Office of Vietnam accepted and issued 2,304 Copyright and Related Rights Registration Certificates for authors and owners, an fifteen percent increase in the Registration Certificates issued in the same period of 2006.

According to the report from the Southern branch of Vietnam Center of Protection Music Copyright (the VCPMC’s Southern Branch), in July 2007, they collected the royalty more than VND 237 million, which cover the fields of performance, ring tune, hotel, supermarket, recording, karaoke and broadcasting.

From 20th to 31st, Oct, 2008, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) organized, in cooperation with the Japan Copyright Office (JCO), The Agency for Cultural Affairs of the Government of Japan and with the Assistance of the Copyright Research and Information Center of Japan (CRIC), a Special Training Course on the Enforcement of Copyright and Related Rights. The participants were senior customs officers from China, Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam.

Participants came from Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Japan, Laos, Mongolia, Myanmar, Philippines, Republic of Korea, Thailand and Vietnam.
